University of North Carolina is a school that nearly every American has heard of, either for academics or athletics. They aren’t in the news for succeeding in either of those right now, they are in the news for a scandal involving those two. The university is being investigated for academic fraud, which about 3,000 students have been involved in, most of them were athletes. The scandal is highlighted on the football and men’s basketball team which combine to generate about $50 million in revenue a year. About 20% of student-athletes were steered by advisors to take a “paper class” to boost their GPA. The class was supposed to meet for lectures but never did and the only assignment was a paper. The report states that they were either plagiarized or incomplete and the students still received an A or B in the class. The department’s chair Julian Nyang’oro’s charges were dropped for felony fraud when she cooperated with the lead investigator Kenneth Wainstein.
To me this is a huge deal because it’s such a major institution. It’s cheating at the level that means the most, education. Athletics is just something we do for fun, hoping it takes us somewhere in life that we could make some money. But education will last forever, if these individuals actually got a degree, and went on to play professional football or basketball they would have a plan for after their athletic career is over. This is appalling to me that professional teachers, people with their doctorates would do something like this for students, which maybe one or two of them will actually have a career in their respective sport. http://www.buzzfeed.com/mollyhensleyclancy/report-shows-widespread-academic-fraud-at-university-of-nort
